Teacher's transportation planning guide
Planning a Washington, DC museum field trip?
Compare educational destinations, prepare school approvals and request transportation from a locally operated bus company.
Museum destinations to consider
These are independent trip-planning suggestions. Steve's Bus Service is not affiliated with the Smithsonian museums and does not sell museum admission. Photos are of the buildings, not of our buses.
National Museum of Natural History Fossils, ecology, and a Mall drop-off School groups use this Mall museum for fossils, ocean life, and earth science. The building sits on the National Mall, so the hard part is usually the clock, not the mileage: timed entry, lunch, and getting everyone back to the bus.
National Air and Space Museum Flight, space, and STEM on the Mall Classes come for aircraft, spacecraft, and a short walk from other Mall stops. Timed-entry days need a real arrival window, not a guess.
National Museum of African American History and Culture History, culture, and timed passes Schools and church groups request this museum for history and civic trips. Passes are often timed, and the visit can run long if the group walks the history galleries.
National Museum of American History Innovation, civic life, and Mall timing Teachers use this museum for invention, culture, and civics. It pairs with other Mall buildings when the group can actually make the walk and the entry times. See more destinations, including the Mall, the zoo, and trips we have to confirm →
What your school should prepare
Use this as an independent planning checklist. Your school or district may require its own official approval and parent-permission forms.
- School and lead teacher contact
- Travel date and alternate date
- Student and chaperone counts
- School pickup and return location
- Museum arrival and departure windows
- Group reservations and entry requirements
- Accessibility and mobility needs
- School purchase-order or invoicing process
Transportation timing and pricing questions
When requesting buses, provide your school departure time, museum arrival window, expected visit duration, number of passengers and return deadline. Ask about loading zones and parking rules directly with the venue. Fuel, driver hours, vehicle requirements and trip conditions affect individualized pricing; no price or vehicle is guaranteed by submitting a request.
Trips that cross state or district boundaries require operator eligibility review. Do not submit student medical records or rosters through the public quote form.
