Portraits in the old Patent Office

Why groups go

The Portrait Gallery and the American Art Museum share the old Patent Office building, a few blocks north of the Mall. Civics and art groups use it when a Mall-only day is too crowded.

The Newseum, which used to sit nearby, closed in 2019. This page is the Portrait Gallery building, not a closed museum.

Bus drop-off and loading

  • Downtown streets are tight. Send the entrance on the reservation and the time you need to be there.
  • A combined Archives visit should be written as two stops.

Washington, DC and Prince George's, Charles, and Montgomery counties are the local area named on this site. Sending a request does not reserve a vehicle.
